Review: American Horror Story: Coven, Episode 3

Episode three is probably one of the most disturbing in the series, and it includes more than some gory scenes. The direction it is going is pretty similar to that of “Asylum” - everyone is a monster. Maybe except for Sarah Paulson’s Cordelia, which reminds even more of the previous season. Oh, and there’s Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) who is one of those bland characters that are completely indifferent to the viewers.

This episodes presents some scenes from Fiona’s (phenomenal as always Jessica Lange) youth and explains how she became the Supreme. You thought Sister Jude in “Asylum” was a bitch? She’s nothing compared to Fiona. Her quest for youthfulness is actually terrifying, but I don’t get one thing - if she’s the most powerful witch, can’t she just find a spell that would make her younger?

I really wish there was more of Kathy Bate’s Delphine LaLaurie (her reaction to the information that a black person is the President of the United States was priceless) and Lily Rabe’s Misty Day (living in the woods and listening to Fleetwood Mac, how hippie is that?). They really enrich the series with their outstanding performances. Luckily, it seems that we’ll be seeing more of them onscreen shortly.

Just like before, the producers decided to mix many seemingly inconsistent parts and make it work perfectly. Child abuse? A minotaur? A fertilization ritual? It’s all there. I also really like the fact that they are able to successfully combine the modern take on magic (witch school) with more traditional one (voodoo). Hopefully they’ll keep it up in the next episodes.
